What's in a name?

Shelby is retrieving a phezzy bird pelted dummy, which is the actual size and weight of a ringneck pheasant. This drill not only reinforces the command "fetch, but also teaches her how to pick up and carry such a large bird and also puts those coveted feathers in her mouth. She retrieved 10 out of 10 tosses with very little coaching during this yard exercise session! I'm super impressed with her natural retrieving ability.

Shelby is another pup in our new Llew Crew with our "S" name convention. I've always been a vintage Mustang admirer and so what could be more fitting than naming a sleek and stealthy Llewellin after a high performance sporty car with many of the same traits.

We acquired Shelby from Daybreak Llewellins as an 8-week old pup so we also used part of her founding kennel name in her registered name.

DNA / Health Screening

DNA Parentage - The American Field/UC Davis

Result = VIP Blue and Gold Seal
DNA #: AFP2858

Shelby has been DNA tested to prove Llewellin parentage by the UC Davis Veterinary Genetics Laboratory at UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine. Her certificate displays the Blue and Gold seal signifying "VIP" (Verifiable Identified Parentage) confirming both the sire and dam of the dog to be as stated in the pedigree, and confirming that she is a purebred Llewellin Setter.

DNA Analysis - Embark

Genetic Disease Results:  At Risk = 0, Carrier 0
Inbreeding Coefficient = 17%
Test Date: 01/07/19

Shelby's DNA sample was submitted to Embark for an all-inclusive genetic health test consisting of inbreeding coefficient and results for nearly all genetic mutation tests covering 165 diseases on over 200,000 genetic markers in 16 different areas (see more).

Hips - OFA

Result = GOOD
OFA #: LS-87G24F-VPI
Exam Date: 12/17/2019
Norberg Angle: R100°, L104° (GOOD range 100°-104°)
Percent Coverage: R56.4%, L64.1%

Shelby has been certified free of hip dysplasia (HD). Based upon the radiograph submitted to the OFA, the consensus from three different vets was that no evidence of hip dysplasia was recognized and that hip joint conformation was within normal limits.

Only dogs that are certified free of HD at 24 months or older are given an OFA number.

Eyes - OFA

Result = NORMAL
CAER #: LS-EYE8/21F-VPI
Exam Date:  10/10/19

Shelby has had her eyes examined by a veterinary opthalmologist who is a member of the American College of Veterinary Opthamologists (ACVO). Both eyes were determined to be NORMAL. Paperwork has been sent to the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) for registration in the Companion Animal Eye Registry (CAER).

Thyroid Function - Embark

Congenital Hypothyroidism Results = CC (clear)

At Risk = No,   Carrier = No

As part of the cumulative genetic testing performed by submission of Shelby's DNA sample to Embark, all thyroid markers for genetic disease were tested.

Hunting Style

Shelby is like a silver bullet, fast as lightning, straight to the point and extremely agile. You can just see the power in her acceleration and the determination in her eyes as she's turned loose in the outdoors. Like her mother Pigeon, she's a born natural retriever. In our first retrieving drill sessions with her, she didn't require much coaching at all before she was retrieving like a pro. In later sessions retrieving 10 out of 10 throws of the phezzy dummy. We are so impressed with her natural instincts and biddability. She's a quick learner, aims to please and loves bringing you back her prize in exchange for a little love and affection.

Temperament

Shelby is a darling girl with a sweet, affectionate and submissive personality.  She is a quiet dog with a soft and gentle demeanor. She enjoys snuggling into you for a good rub and puts her paw up on you.  We say "she can't hold her licker!" because you cannot pet her without feeling a few flicks of her tongue.  She is obedient and intelligent, quickly learning new things through training.

Some words to describe her would be:
obedient, submissive, sweet, gentle, soft personality, kind eyes, aims to please, giver, always bringing gifts, affectionate, attention seeker, snuggler, little lover, natural retriever, speeding bullet, stylish point, natural instincts, natural retriever.

Conformation

Size: On the smaller side for a female, around 40 pounds, standing only 20 inches at the withers and has a smaller overall frame. Embark DNA results predicts her adult weight at 44 lbs.

Coat: Soft and silky, sleek, flat (not wavy).

Coat & Nose Color Genotype: Ee, BB, ky/ky  (Black Tricolor/Black nose) Hidden: Orange

Tail:  Her tail is on the shorter side which she naturally carries straight and also has a nice 11 o'clock straight tail when on point.

Feet: Traditional spoon shaped paw

Markings

Shelby is a heavily ticked Tri-color Llewellin (White/Black/Tan). She has a black half mask on the right side of her face and a black ear on the left and a large black body patch on the left side of her belly along with a heavy amount of black ticking all over. Being a tri-color, she also has tan points, meaning tan above her eyes, on her muzzle, under her ears, her chest and tan ticking mixed with black ticking on her lower legs.
