What's in a name?
Duke was whelped here at HHLS in our Litter P, (HOPE x Jack). His temporary "P" litter name was "Pierce". Duke was sold to a client on stud contract so he was named by his new family.
He is a 2nd generation pup from of our H.O.P.E line. We bred his grand-dam "Duchess of Adena" to TV Hank's son "Sillman's Hank Boy" (aka Hank Jr), he is the son of HOPE, thus keeping that bloodline alive.
DNA / Health Screening
DNA Parentage - American Field/UC Davis
Result = VIP Blue and Gold Seal
DNA #: AFP2240
Duke has been DNA tested to prove Llewellin parentage by the UC Davis Veterinary Genetics Laboratory at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine. His certificate displays the Blue and Gold seal signifying "VIP" (Verifiable Identified Parentage) confirming both the sire and dam of the dog to be as stated in the pedigree, and confirming that he is a purebred Llewellin Setter.
DNA Analysis - Embark
Genetic Disease Results: At Risk = 0, Carrier = 1
Inbreeding Coefficient = 20%
Test Date: 04/12/19
Duke's DNA sample was submitted to Embark for an all-inclusive genetic health test consisting of inbreeding coefficient and results for nearly all genetic mutation tests covering 165 diseases on over 200,000 genetic markers in 16 different areas (see more).
Carrier Condition: This indicates the dog has inherited a recessive allele for a gentic trait or mutation, but this does not indicate the dog has the disease, rather that he is a carrier of the gene that causes the disease. Through selective breeding we will ensure that he is paired with a female that is not also a carrier and thus cannot pass the disease on to his offspring.
System: Urinary
Condition: Hyperuricosuria and Hyperuricemia or Urolithiasis
Description: This condition causes kidney and bladder stones composed of urate.
Hips - OFA
OFA #: LS-78F26M-PI
Exam Date: 12/13/2017
Norberg Angle: R104°, L96° (GOOD range 100°-104°)
Percent Coverage: R64.4%, L56.9%
Duke has been certified free of hip dysplasia (HD). Based upon the radiograph submitted to the OFA, the consensus from three different vets was that no evidence of hip dysplasia was recognized and that hip joint conformation was within normal limits.
Eyes - OFA CAER
Result = NORMAL
CAER #: LS-EYE4/41M-VPI
Exam Date: 03/28/19
Duke has had his eyes examined by a veterinary opthalmologist who is a member of the American College of Veterinary Opthamologists (ACVO). Both eyes were determined to be NORMAL. Paperwork has been sent to the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) for registration in the Companion Animal Eye Registry (CAER).
Thyroid Function - Embark
Congenital Hypothyroidism Results = CC (clear)
At Risk = No, Carrier = No
As part of the cumulative genetic testing performed by submission of Duke's DNA sample to Embark, all thyroid markers for genetic disease were tested.
Hunting Style
Duke is a highly energetic hunter with great natural instincts. He is eager to hunt and always wants to be the first one out of the truck after arrival to the hunting destination. He usually works at close to medium range and naturally adjusts his range based on the type of cover being hunted. He works hard no matter whether it's the first field of the day or the last, consistently putting in over 20 mile days. Duke has a classic 11 o'clock tail on point and naturally honors other hunting dogs in the party. While Duke is not a strong retriever, he does mark downed birds.
Temperament
Duke is an affectionate dog with all the Llewellin quirks. He loves attention, and in his opinion there is no such thing as too much. He is obedient and quiet by nature, but is always up for playtime with other dogs and people whenever the situation arises.
Some words to describe him would be:
Gentle, affectionate, happy-go-lucky, long hauler, driven, focused, and stylish.
Conformation
Size: Medium frame, around 50 lbs. He's a nice well-built and compact dog and is about what I call the "perfect" size for a male Llewellin.
Coat: Soft and silky, slightly wavy
Tail: He holds his tail at a nice 11 o'clock position when on point.
Feet: Traditional spoon shaped paw
Markings
Duke is a Chestnut Tricolor Belton Llewellin (White/Chestnut/Tan). His body is predominantly white with a moderate amount of chestnut ticking and no body patches. Since he is tricolor he also has tan points (meaning orange ticking on legs, and face).

(05/1988 - 01/2000).
Bull was a great grouse dog of tremendous stamina and will to find birds coupled with a superior nose and intellect. Bull made birds. He became a grouse dog with such desire and drive he was a handful. One thing only on his mind, "Find another grouse!". From his humble beginnings as a dog hunting too close, he emerged as a great one few men ever witness. Grouse dogs are at the very top of the realm of birddog excellence and he was at the top of this loyal order.
