Bob and I went hunting on the Pheasant Season opener -- Saturday October 25th -- with John Campbell, a local Sports Director for KCRG-TV9 news. We were also accompanied by Bob Bartz and Tuck.
The dogs worked tirelessly, but the birds were scarce and only found one fresh roost, where a bird had quickly ducked down a nearby drainage pipe. As you'll see in John's video, the dogs got down in the drainage ditch almost to their tails!
We also had another opportunity to use our Garmin Astro GPS system. Each dog wears a harness with a GPS locater inside and it is a great tool to have in tall brush and rough terrain where you can't always get a visual on your dogs. The Garmin has many nice features including a compass which indicates in which direction your dog is located from you and exactly how far. It also shows the distance a dog has traveled and the average speed as well as showing a map of all the paths the dog has taken during the hunt. Now that we've had it, it would be hard to live without it.
Here is the story as reported by John Campbell on the KCRG website.
