When we give our dogs their heartworm medicine we give them the herb Milk Thistle for a week afterwards. It is said to help detoxify the liver from the effects of the strong heartworm medicine. Also, we give the treatment every 45 days, rather than rather than 30 days, from mid-February through Oct/Nov. They are healthy and others who have used the same schedule for several years are doing fine with it. No need to over medicate...save some money too Smile _________________ Dr. Rex Williamson

Thanks Rex,
You bring up another good point, one that most vets do not warn about. In these times when folks are so busy with their lives, it's easy to just take the advice of a professional (veterinarian), or read the labels on the product and follow the instructions without a second thought, however the real question here is whether or not that guidance can be trusted. I believe we are prompted to overmedicate and overvaccinate to some extent, so it's good that you are doing your own research and forming your own opinions with your dogs best interests at heart. I wish all pet owners could be so conscientious.
It's been great to have your participation in these forums because it seems you have the same philosophy on health and research as we do. Your posts are much appreciated and thanks for sharing with us. _________________ Laura Whitlock

In our town (Ottawa), Milk Thistle is available at Walgreen's and Wal-Mart pharmacy. I think we found it with the vitamins and supplements.
As for dosage -- what I've read for dogs in the 40 - 70 pound range is that 50% of the recommended human dosage is adequate. The number of pills is dependant, of course, on the dosage per capsule. Just need to check the bottle directions for the recommended adult dose. We give it to them for about one week. Mmmmmmmmm. They slide down easy with cream cheese or peanut butter
I read on one website that it is may not be advised during pregnancy -- so you may want to check w/ the vet if you are thinking of Duchess. _________________ Dr. Rex Williamson

Thanks Rex for the info...
We have not given Duchess her heartworm pill for August yet (which was due a few days ago). Since the puppies are due so soon, we have decided to wait until after the pups are born. I'm always leary about giving any type of medication during pregnancy anyway, especially heartworm. _________________ Laura Whitlock
